Dave Smart. born in 1st May 1948, a Scout Leader for the 89th Leicester (1st Houghton-on-the-Hill) Scout group.

Highly respected, Dave was known for his love of hiking, and would often take his troop on hikes, as-well as organised challenge hikes.

whilst out with his troop on a hike in Derbyshire, he felt ill, and asked his assistant leaders and Explorers to continue whilst he made his way back to the minibus.

on their return, they found Dave motionless on the ground, they did what they could to help.

Dave Smart died of a heart attack on  25th February 2006, his death was a blow to his group as well as the many in Scouting, who knew him.

Dave's memory has been kept alive through the challenge hike, in his name.

The first ever Dave Smart took place in tilton, a one day event, and was won by his troop the 89th.  The following year was also a one day event and from then onwards, it became a weekend camping event as the Cursons took on the organising of the event. As the years went on, it's popularity grew over the years.

Every year since the hike took place, Daves wife,  was honored with presenting the shield to the winning team.
